Lorelai

Caleb led me by the hand around the back of the house to the separate entrance for his apartment. I’d seen Aunt Bonnie and Uncle Ted’s light go off as we drove up to the ranch, but I doubted they were already asleep. I was guessing Aunt Bonnie had lots to tell Uncle Ted about their boys’ sexy dance routine. It was one thing them knowing why I was going to Caleb’s apartment, but it was better they not hear us going through their house to do it.

“Come on in,” Caleb said, pushing the door open and standing to one side to let me pass. “So, this is my place.”

I stood in the doorway and looked around. It was a large room that had a leather couch and huge T.V. at one end, and a small kitchen area at the other. Opposite the door, I could see there was a sleeping area that you got to up some steps. There was another door to the right of the huge bed, it was slightly ajar and I guessed that was the bathroom. It was great, definitely a man’s space with its minimal, dark décor, but it appeared to be clean and tidy.

“This is nice,” I said, allowing Caleb to guide me further into the room.

“Yeah, I know. I can’t thank Ted and Bonnie enough. Jesse, too. He was the one that did all the hard work; designing and building it, well, telling the crew what he wanted.”

“You didn’t get any say in it?” I giggled and shook my head, thinking about my bossy cousin.

“No, but then it was a surprise. They did it while I was in my last semester of college. I love it, though, and don’t think I’d change anything.”

Caleb shut the door and turned the lock before turning back to me. He suddenly looked unsure, as though this was maybe a bad idea. The cocky, confident male dancer from a few hours ago had retreated, and the man I was left with was just as nervous about this as me. It was like we both knew that what happened over the course of the next few minutes and hours would be a game changer for both of us.

“We don’t have to do this, you know,” I said, going to push past him, “if you’ve changed your mind. No biggie.”

Finding his confidence, he reached for my hand and rubbed his thumb up and down, sending soft thrills of anticipation through me.

“I haven’t changed my mind.” He tucked some hair behind my ear and gave me a chin lift. “Have you?”

I didn’t hesitate, and shook my head.

“There’s no damn way I would ever change my mind about this, Lorelai,” Caleb said softly. “You’ve been under my skin since the day that sexy, sassy little ass of yours swaggered up the porch steps.”

“Is that so?” I replied, unable to help the grin that broke out.

Caleb nodded. “I might be a quiet, shy, country boy, but it hasn’t stopped me thinking about this.
